Lesbos belongs to the islands of the Eastern Aegean and is the third largest Greek island after Crete and Evia. It occupies an area of 1,630 square kilometers and its coastline stretches for about 370 kilometers. Lesvos is located in front of the Gulf of Adramyttis at a distance of 5-8 miles from the Asia Minor coast.

The island of Lesvos belongs to the Prefecture of Lesvos together with the islands of Limnos, Agios Efstratios and the islets around them to the north. There are two gulfs: the gulf of Gera and the gulf of Kalloni in the south, while a multitude of coves and headlands surround it.

In the mountains there are streams that cross the plains: Tsikneas in the north, Tsichleotas in the west, Mylopotamos in the center and Sendoutas, Almyropotamos in the south.

Western Lesbos compared to the rest is barren with the exception of small green patches, but the eastern and central part of the island is full of olive groves (11 million olive trees), forests of pines, chestnuts, oaks, brambles and plane trees. Also, the lesbian countryside is covered with an endless variety of herbs and aromatic plants. In general the flora is extremely rich.

We must note here that it is worth paying attention to the flora and fauna of the sea. The climate of Lesvos is mild and healthy: the winter is warm and the sun shines all year round. Rainfall – with a maximum recorded in December and a minimum in July – contributes positively to the fertility of the land. Winter is mild and snowfall is rare – except in the mountains. Also, strong winds blow especially in the period of July-August – the so-called period of “Aegean melts”.

Lesvos’ population is approximately 100,000 inhabitants and Mytilini is the capital of the island and of the Prefecture of Lesvos. Also, Mytilini is the administrative center of the Ministry of the Aegean, the North Aegean Region and the University of the Aegean.

Lesvos is famous for the pure products it produces. Ouzo, virgin olive oil, comes from the purest and most blessed tree, the olive, that you can see anywhere on the island. The locals work endless hours to harvest the olives, to produce the excellent virgin olive. The dairy products mainly “ladotiri” are known all over the country, in Europe and all over the world.
